Upcoming author, K. M. Awad shares the story of life in her book, Reflections of the Past (ISBN 978-1952263309). As a Muslim American girl, who was born and raised in California, Awad faced a lot of complications, racism, and trials in her life, they started when she was quite young but carried on for most of her life. Her parents were immigrants and like most immigrants they did not want to abandon the culture and values they grew up with just because they were living in the US. They wanted to raise Awad and her siblings in the same way they were raised. But things were different for Awad, she had seen and liked the culture outside her home, she wanted to embrace the culture of the place she was born and raised in because she belonged there. She was torn apart between pleasing her parents and living the life that she wanted. Islam was an important part of the household. Though they were not as religious, the Muslim values were respected and restrictions were placed upon Awad and her siblings. Being the oldest child did not help at all for her. In the book, she writes about every part of her journey that made her what she is today. It is truly inspiring how Awad shares her story with the world and embraces all the choices that have led up to this moment in her life.
