Michael Flynn is the former national security advisor for President Donald Trump, who pleaded guilty to lying to agents of the FBI, while serving the Trump administration. A retired United States Army Lieutenant General, Flynn is reported to have made false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection to the Special Counsel’s investigation into the interference of the Russian government in 2016 elections. Flynn resigned from his position as the national security advisor in February 2017, after it was revealed that he had conversations with Vise President, Mike Pence, and others, about his meeting with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador. Kislyak and Flynn’s conversations were about sanctions.
Flynn also served in the army for 33 years and reached the rank of lieutenant general before he retired in 2014. During Barack Obama’s run as president, Flynn served as the head of military intelligence as the direction of the Defense Intelligence Agency. According to USA today, “Prosecutors alleged Flynn “did willfully and knowingly make materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statements” to FBI agents during a Jan. 24 interview about his conversations with the Russian ambassador. According to the allegations, Flynn falsely told FBI agents that he did not ask Kislyak to delay a vote on a pending United Nations Security Council resolution. In court on Friday, prosecutors said at least some of Flynn's contacts with Russian officials had been coordinated with a "senior official of the presidential transition."
Flynn was considered one of the most vulnerable people in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. He has made no secret of his desire for a deal to testify in exchange for immunity from possible prosecution.”
That same day, Michael Flynn pleaded guilty and made a statement:
"After over 33 years of military service to our country, including nearly five years in combat away from my family, and then my decision to continue to serve the United States, it has been extraordinarily painful to endure these many months of false accusations of 'treason' and other outrageous acts. Such false accusations are contrary to everything I have ever done and stood for. But I recognize that the actions I acknowledged in court today were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right. My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel's Office reflects a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country. I accept full responsibility for my actions."
