Technology (including the Internet and interpersonal connections) is one of the links driving our society forward. Innovations in all aspects of daily life make us smarter, faster, and better. So every time we hear older people talking about the Internet being a bad thing, we wonder why they don't want us to live a smarter life.
The biggest concern of technological usage is that it makes us dependent. We often see people looking and acting like addicts every time they are around technology. They cannot stop using mobile phones, iPods, P.C.s, or tablets for play. They cannot disconnect themselves from the seamless flow of information that the Internet provides to us. Like everything in life, when you rely on something, it becomes dangerous.Perhaps, it's the right time to start thinking about whether you need to stop and restart yourself.Lou Pica explains in his book "A Date with G.O.D" how digital slavery impacted the worldand howwe can't live without it.
This article providesa few tips to help you take a break from your digital addiction
1) Turn the phone face down
Putting down the face of your cell phone means preventing your mobile phone from diverting your attention every time you receive a message. It's not just a statement, but a way of life. When you keep your phone face-down, you normalize the way you think and act. It shows that you are in full control of yourself, and don't allow any technology to control you.
2) Get sufficient sleep
For some reason, we can't help but check each one of those notifications until we are awake, and getting sufficient sleep has become impossible. The moment you start using your cell phone, you can't simply put it back. One thing leads to another, and you find it hard to keep it away. Once you pick it during your bedtime, you start answering all the emails and checking Facebook notifications, resulting in improper sleep. Therefore, you must never pick your cell phone during bedtime and get sufficient sleep.
3) Go for a Walk
Many people are not big fans of walking, but we mustgo for a walk whenever possible. Everybody knows that it's so healthy for your body and mind. Besides, walking allows us to focus on the real world around instead of looking at ourcell phones. The most prominent reason is walking enables you to spend time only with yourself. However, you can put some music on, and walk. When you start walking, you can't text or send emails because it's not comfortable, and also impossible to think. Walking allows us to concentrate on our thoughts and is the best way to relax.
4) Meditate
There is much more to discuss the effects of meditation on your body and soul. Sitting quietly and breathing gently gives you time to focus on your inner self. Taking a second of your schedule to meditate will allow you to stop all the work immediately and focus on yourself without further interruption. Even spending 5 minutes in meditation each day will enable you to relieve all distractions from mobile phones and computers quietly.
5) Turn-Off Notifications
The plus point of push notifications is that they can ensure that you do not miss anything that is happening at the moment. However, the disadvantage is that you don't know when the next disturbance will occur. To be fair, we understand the importance of enabling push notifications from your email client, so let's focus on other apps. Do you really need to be notified immediately of all "likes" you receive on social media?
Consider how much noise and interference you can reduce if you turn off push notifications in most news / social apps. As discussed, push notifications can help us avoid losing important content on our phones. Still, too many push notifications from secondary sources and apps could prevent us from seeing the real content we encounter in real life.
Sometimes we can't understand the proper use of technology, and of course, we can't live without it. But once we know how to find a balance between the constant need for information and the need to connect with others, we will no longer be digital slaves.
