Nature vs. Nurture – Kimberly Britton

Dr. Kimberly Britton’s latest book, The Slave Within, focuses on how different systems have enslaved people all around the world. Britton presents readers with a variety of reasons and topics, which prove that world systems, more than often, work against the people and not for the people. For many centuries, people have been taught to believe that systems help us to improve our lives. But this is far from the truth. In reality, we are bound to the system in shackles and unaware of the reality that surrounds us.

Britton goes on to discuss how the concept of “nature vs nurture" plays an essential role in the development of the human mind and the unique characteristics, which sets each individual apart from each other. In The Slave Within, Britton writes about the concept in the following terms:

“Both nature and nurture play a pivotal part in how we grow. However, there are scientists, psychologists, and researchers that contradict the aforementioned theory. This gives rise to the never-ending debate – nature versus nurture. There has been much debate on this topic over the years, and, even to this date, it continues to be the center of many debates. The said debate has served as a dividing line among many psychologists, and for a good reason.

Simply put, the nature side of the debate comes from biology. According to this side, nature, meaning genes, shape how we look, act, and behave. On the other side, the nurture side looks into work done by various behavioral psychologists whose work looks into conditioning. It’s the same set of principles used to train a dog. By giving the dog a command and rewarding it, the trainer conditions the dog to know that if they hear and obey the command, they will get a treat. This is nurturing, and according to it,people can also be trained. Freud, in his theory on moraldevelopment, involving the ID, ego, and superego, statedthat children are born evil and are trained to be good. There are numerous case studies that indicate the role genes playin development. The most reliable and interesting study was conducted on identical twins who were adopted by different parents from birth. After studying the development of these twins into adulthood, researcherswere able to see the role the environment and identicalgenes played on their development.

According to the researchers, the twins shared health problems, IQ levels, preferences, hobbies, interests, and even brain waves. However, the researchers found that the parents who had adopted the twins played a huge role in the twins’ political, religious, and moral beliefs, as well as their self-discipline.”
